Marble Ratings

Marble is typically given a soundness rating by the Marble Institute of America to determine its quality.  The ratings range from A to D with A being the highest rating.  Once a marble slab is installed, the soundness rating only reflects the appearance of the marble.  The basic criteria for the grades of marble are listed below:

  • Soundness Group A: Marble surfaces in this group have few geological flaws and voids with subtle veining and muted colors.
  • Soundness Group B: This group has few flaws but may have micro to medium levels of fissures and pitting.
  • Soundness Group C: This group may have geological flaws, voids, veins, or lines of separation that are typically repaired at the factory.
  • Soundness Group D: This group contains even more variations than Group C that are factory repaired. Marble of this grade has brighter colors with decorative veins and swirls.

Finishes

Marble countertops are available in two main finishes: polished and honed. Polished marble has a very shiny finish that creates a mirrored look. Honed finishes are created by removing the top layer of marble to leave a smooth, satin finish. Both types of finishes should be sealed for protection.

  • Make sure marble countertops are sealed regularly.

  • Put pads or pot holders under hot pots and serving dishes and avoid putting hot items directly on the counter.
